279: Shut This Down

HITnRUN Phase One (2015)
Shut This Down is a Battle Royale between album-mate Ain’t About to Stop, Public Enemy’s Shut ’em Down and a roided-out My Name is Prince. It’s a klaxon soundtracking the destruction of city infrastructure as 100ft robots clash with the super-hero protagonist. Decepticons’ entrance music. Mothra’s Eye of the Tiger. Kaiju hip-hop from the Pacific breach. Bridges and roads are gonna get upturned and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.

  1. Blurrgggggg – this is one of Prince’s worst 5 albums….i can’t stomach this song being on this list – not to mention this high….. This combines the worst of Da Da Da, Jughead, Face Down and other “macho” songs.

  2. My son recently turned me on to the Death Grips, which this song somehow reminds me of, especially after reading “Kaiju hip-hop from the Pacific breach”. Coining such phrases is a service that Tora Tora is providing to the world—an entryway into listening with fresh ears. Ignore the blood streaming from them though.

    1. I LOVE the Death Grips! I don’t find everything they do listenable but for raw energy they’re one of the most exciting things to happen to hip-hop in years.

  3. Yes, I pretty much hate hip hop. I find it discordant and displeasing. Most of Prince’s Hiphop songs would go in my bottom 50 list…including this one. Fortunately – this is your list….and I am loving every minute reading this.
